In retrospect, six years (6) ago, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, launched
a new era in education reform designed to improve student achievement and close
achievement gaps. No Child Left Behind requires each state to define Adequate
Yearly Progress (AYP), and set the minimum levels of improvement as part of
the accountability provisions outlined in the law.
No Child Left Behind has set the goal of having
every child make the grade on state-defined education standards by the end of
the 2013-2014 school years. Maryland has developed benchmarks to measure progress
and make sure every child is learning.
Maryland progress report of all students during the 2005-2006 school year shows
that eighty-nine percent (89%) of children in Prince George’s County did
not make the Proficient Level Benchmark in Mathematics.
We are glad that, High School Assessment (HAS) statistics showed that 3,500
students of the 5,469 who took the biology, algebra, government and English
tests were successful, and are now well on their way to graduating in 2009.
The county’s numbers only reflect those juniors who have taken all four
HSAs. Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt topped the number of passes,
with 91 percent. A total of 476 students passed all four subjects, while just
43 did not. At Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, 75 percent
of test takers passed the four subjects. High Point High School in Beltsville
and Bowie High School registered 72 percent passes in the four subjects.
|
Among the struggling schools were Potomac High in Oxon Hill and Central High in Capitol Heights, where 43 percent passed all four tests. Fairmont Heights High School had a 46 percent pass rate. Across Prince George’s there are about 2,000 students who must meet HSA requirements before graduation next school year.
